Sonny Okosun

Nigerian music legend, Sonny Okosun, said it, NOT me!! What a way to start the weekend! Someone sent us THIS SONG to help usher the weekend in, and it sure put a smile on our faces!

The song, Tire Ni Oluwa (though it has been called Olu Ebube by some, clarification, por favor?) was played ad nauseam at all the ‘functions’ back in the day. You’ll still hear this crate diggin’ classic played at a party from time to time.

Sonny Okosun, (also known as, Sonny Okosuns), was known in the early part of his music career for addressing:

…political and social issues in his tunes, said the site. “… Not on the direct, in-your-face, these-are-Nigerian-issues style of Fela Kuti, but more on a pan-African ‘stop the wars, let’s progress’ tempo with tracks like Revolution, Now or Never, Fire in Soweto, etc.

His early influences included The Beatles, but he later became known for fusing Reggae and Pop music with Nigerian beats. Later in life, he became a Gospel artist:

Okosun’s career faded in the late 1980s, but the singer roared back in 1994 with the smash gospel album “Songs of Praise,” which won a number of Nigerian music awards. Since then, “Evangelist Sonny Okosuns” had ridden a wave of Christian evangelism in Nigeria to become the country’s foremost gospel musician, with a growing fan base in other parts of the world.

Sonny Okosun died in 2008.
